Nutritional drinkQUESTION: Is there a healthier version of "Ensure" for those whose digestive system won't tolerate food at this time? Are there topical forms of nuttition? Thank you. POSTED BY LAURA :: MAINE USA :: 08/31/2009 10:35 AM DEBRA'S ANSWER:
I'm glad you are looking for an alternative.
Here are the typical ingredients (ingredients vary according to flavor:
Water (UD), Sugar (Sucrose), Sodium, Calcium Caseinates, Maltodextrin (Corn), High Oleic Safflower Oil, Soy Protein Isolate, Soy Oil, Canola Oil, Cocoa Powder (Processed with Alkali), Soy Lecithin, Natural & Artificial Flavor, Carrageenan.
To this are added the Vitamins & Minerals: Potassium Citrate, Calcium Phosphate Tribasic, Sodium Citrate, Magnesium Chloride, Magnesium Phosphate Dibasic, Salt (Sodium chloride), Choline Chloride, Ascorbic Acid, Ferric Phosphate, Alpha Tocopherol Acetate, Zinc Sulfate, Niacinamide, Calcium Pantothenate, Manganese Sulfate, Cupric Sulfate, Vitamin A Palmitate, Thiamine Chloride Hydrochloride, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin, Folic Acid, Chromium Chloride, Biotin, Sodium Molybdate, Potassium Iodide, Sodium Selenate, Phylloquinone, Vitamin D3, Cyanocobalamin.
It's basically a multivitamin and protein powder mixed with a lot of refined sugar, refined oil, soy, and artificial flavor.
A healthier option would be great to know about.
Readers, any experience with this? Debra :-)

I am a huge fan of the Bio Chem Whey Protein powder and the 365 Whole Foods Whey powder. I prefer the vanilla flavor and you can literally just get a glass jar and add the serving size scoop with your rice, almond or soy milk and you get a healthy dose of protein (16 grams). As for the vitamins, read the labels as some of these powders have vitamins as well. I just take a high powered multi vitamin with the drink. The best thing about these powders is that they are have little to no sugar (sweetened with Stevia) and are really filling.
COMMENT FROM DEBRA:
So I just need to say that I don't recommend protein powders of any kind as a replacement for whole, fresh food. I'm including this question and these comments for those, as mentioned in the original question, who cannot eat food for whatever reason.
Protein powders are not whole foods. They are isolated and concentrated nutrients, taken out of their natural context. They are highly industrialized and processed.
Our bodies need whole, fresh foods.

You could try the complete whole food health optimizer called vega. My family uses it as a subsitute for breakfast when running late. Some of the large health food stores carry it. But if not or if you live in a small town like me, you can check it out at sequelnaturals.com/vega

Debra, I agree with your comments about whole live foods. Unfortuneately, the doctors and various strong willed people, including a family member recommend Ensure etc. I'm doing my best to use veg and fruit but mom likes a standard american diet ( which did not prevent cancer!). im amazed at how many people bring by sweets! I hope to have a juicer soon. POSTED BY LAURA :: MAINE USA :: 09/09/2009 2:44 AM
I use the miessence probiotic super food InLiven, while this is not marketed as a food replacement, I find it works great in this way. It is certified organic, highest quality ingredients.
You can drink a teaspoon in a glass of apple juice, it is a whole super food, not isolated.
I also have customers who use it in this way.
You can read more on my site if you are interested:

another product I have used is from Dr. Ian Shillington, called Total Nutrition, also a whole food, not isolates. totally organic and he is committed to this.
you can check it out in his store: www.organicsolutionsstore.com. POSTED BY ERIN ELY :: ELY ORGANICS - YOUR SOURCE FOR MIESSENCE CERTIFIED ORGANIC PRODUCTS :: ELYORGANICS.COM/ :: OREGON USA :: 09/09/2009 2:51 AM
If you are really interested in using whole fruits and veggies, try making green smoothie's. Just grab your blender, a handfull or two of greens (lettace, spinach or other) a couple of fruits (bannanas, oranges etc.) a cup or 2 of water and blend till smooth. All the nutrients of a meal in a easy to digest way. If you want more info on specific recipies head over to www.rawfamily.com There's also a video on the percentage of fruits to greens. I think it is 60 fruit and 40 greens. But you can check it out to be sure.
My family does not eat the way they do but the recipies are suprisingly good, that we use quite a bit of the info and recipies found there to incorporate in our way of eating. POSTED BY LISA :: PENNSYLVANIA USA :: 09/09/2009 2:30 PM :: POST YOUR COMMENT
