Remedy for organic cotton odorsQUESTION: Debra,
I recently bought my first set of organic cotton sheets, and found out what so many were saying about the odor was true. I too, could not tolerate the smell. I tried adding boiling water to my wash, baking soda, washing soda and milk, as some other suggested, to no avail. What finally worked for me was fresh lemon juice. I used 4 lemons, cut them in half, squeezed the juice out and poured it into my wash. For good measure, I decided to throw in the lemon halfs - what the heck! I lined dried them sheets and found that the odor was gone, and for me I was now able to tolerate them. I haven't tried lemon juice for other odors, but I intend to.

Yay! Thanks for the solution to a problem I know many are having. Debra :-)
COMMENTS: I'm curious as to why it works. Did you try vinegar? They are both acids, so I wonder whether vinegar would work as well as lemons. POSTED BY MARY :: CALIFORNIA USA :: 09/02/2009 5:31 AM
Debra,
In my attempt to get the odor out of my organic sheets, I believe I also tried vinegar....basically everything I could think of, or any suggestion that I could find that wasn't toxic. Someone once told me they had success boiling their organic sheets, but I didn't have the equipment to pull this off. Anyhow, I don't know why lemon would work and vinegar wouldn't...maybe it has to do with lemon being citric acid and vinegar is acetic acid. I know organic ACV has great medicinal properties, while lemon juice is good for bleaching (have done this too, and it works where vinegar wouldn't). There is definitely something in their chemical make up that makes them function differently.
I neglected to say in my original post that I soaked the sheets overnight, as I had done previously with the other products. All I know is that it worked for me, and I will try it again when other challenging odors come up!
