Trying to find a Bra

QUESTION:

Hi Debra,
With having MCS, I am looking for a bra. I have been wearing Playtex 18 Hour bra's which has polyester, cotton, nylon, and spandex. Sad to say I wear my bra's sometimes until they are really worn. One bra was worn until the spandex band that goes around my body was starting to come through and the spandex was irritating me.

Well, I found two different bra's in the Gaiam Living magazine. The first one is an Unwired Bra which is 90% Swiss Organic cotton/10% spandex. The second one is a No-Wire Support Bra with Sorbtek fabric. I researched and found out Sorbtek, I believe, if I remember correctly, it said something like its synthetic fibers from polyester. I wanted to get one of these bra's until I researched further and got this information.

I know its best to stay away from synthetic, so can you recommend a safe bra?

Thank you very much for the help.

DEBRA'S ANSWER:

Readers?

Debra :-)

COMMENTS:

You can try the KEEP ME brand. Their bras are made of cotton/modal. Great for smaller busts, since there is no underwire.

COMMENT FROM DEBRA: Note that many people get severe skin rashes from Modal.

My big concern about the Gaiam catalog is that the majority of their products come from third-world countries. Whose economy are we supporting and under what conditions are these products made? Too many unanswered questions to be a comfortable choice for me.

One suggestion, and it may seem far out, but --- do you sew? There are actually some excellent sewing patterns for all kinds of underwear, including bras and including yogawear. If you sew, or know someone who could help you out with this kind of project, you can actually create bras to your personal order and for surprisingly little cost. Yes, it does take sewing skill and patience, but it frees you from relying on the marketplace and the often limited choices that can offer.

I have been using Decent Exposures, an online company that has a variety of styles, fabrics and colors. They have excellent customer service and their products hold up well. The site is Decent Exposures

They custom make each order, and are helpful in helping you find your exact size and fit with detailed instructions on the website(they lengthen/shorten straps etc). Their customer service is friendly and efficient. They have an organic cotton option, which is what I get and it holds up well in washer/dryer for the last 2 years. Good luck!

I order my bras exclusively from Decent Exposures, a company that makes comfortable cotton bras and undergarments. The link for their website is: www.decentexposures.com The 15 year old company began as an all woman, cottage industry and they are committed to making comfortable and often, custom made, bras. They have a wide range of sizes, colors and features, as well as cotton and cotton blend fabrics. Prices are fair for the product received.

You might try Decent Exposures -- www.decentexposures.com

They make custom bras, underwear, etc., so I've been able to get latex-free, organic cotton stuff from them made for my specific measurements. They're quite a bit more expensive than off-the-shelf at the discount store, but they are high quality and last a very long time, to the point that the cost is really about the same.

Also, strangely, I've found that the Victoria's Secret Second Skin Satin line doesn't bother my body, either, though so many things do.

YMMV!

For a bra that is 90% cotton, 10% spandex (exclusive of trimming, which is minimal) and with no underwire, I like the GRENIER brand. The bras come in white, black and natural. The brand is made in Canada, but is available in the US. Best to handwash and hang dry, rather than machine wash and dry.

Hi Annette, I have not found a truly "safe" cotton bra because there always seems to be something synthetic lurking in the materials list. The best bra I have found is by Bali. I think its 85% cotton, and my reasoning was that this is my best choice for now. It came in beige and is well constructed, supportive, yet feminine. If you find something better, please post it.

It's my understanding that underwire bras are the worst kind of bra for lymphatic health. The padded bra heats the breast tissue. The shoulder-strap bra causes grooves in your shoulders potentially cutting off nerve flow and circulation to your hands. The sports bra is designed to restrict movement ad compresses breast tissue; bad for circulation and proper lymphatic drainage. For an option, see www.thehealthybracompany.com.

Hi
I use Victoria Secrets Cotton Underwire bras with no problem. I am sure they are far from organic but they are easy to wear and wash and last forever.

I don't know if Debra will be able to publish my comment: you mentioned GAIAM. The first time I saw their website I had a really bad feeling about that site. Just a gut feeling. Sure enough I googled the company name with keywords such as 'scam' and 'fraud' and found many buyer complaints stating that either they don't get what they bought or receive defective items and GAIAM routinely refuses a refund. I also found out that GAIAM lost their BBB certificate a while back because of customer complaints. I hope somehow Debra is able to pass on the info. :)

As for your question, I'd also like the answer but I'm at a loss. I saw the reviews on Amazon for organic cotton bras and they don't support you, unless you're built like boy and don't need a bra in the first place! ;)

COMMENT FROM DEBRA: I'll pass on your comments about Gaiam. You might have noticed I don't have a link to them on Debra's List. Now, while that doesn't always mean anything at all (I may not even know about a company, for example), Gaiam is well known.

I've ordered from them and consistently they sent me poor quality merchandise, which I returned and got a refund. And there was a time when someone recommended a product from Gaiam on this blog and I called them and it was pretty toxic. When I commented on this, the customer service rep said, "Oh, not ALL of our products are green, only some."

So I'm sorry to hear others are having a bad experience.

Hi Debra,
I thank you all for your comments and help. But, Debra, I don't know if you are aware of this, but this email, along with several others, have been sent to me several times. I don't know if you are just finger happy,(ha,ha,ha!) or if it is a problem with your computer system. I just thought I would let you know. But I will check out all of the suggestions. Thank you all so much. I really do appreciate.

Howdy Debra Lynn,

i'm a father that care's very much for my daughter's health. As cancer is so prevlent today.

I went to a women's health seminar in Seattle Washington and found Maria Monti with the Heathy Bra Company.

"Wow" what a difference a bra makes in a women's attitude! My two daughters needed support. Linn with 36 ff and raven 40 jj.

Maria Monti and Lusia Morca make bra's to fit as well support most any one, no underwires to deal with. In keeping in healthy cotton, so that the breasts can breathe as well as putting a women back in to a glammer look as well. Maria can alter the bras as a women goes up and down in weight so the main bra can be used to keep the cost down in replacement. I buy my girl's all ther bra's for the last 5 years . I think it a good investment for their well being. Www.Theheathybracompeny.Com

thank you for your website
