bamboo floor with foam underlayQUESTION: We want to install bamboo flooring in our bedroom and they are click in floor boards so there would be no gluing needed. The brand name is Golden Select. However it has a foam underlay and so far I have been unable to find any specific information on the safety of this underlay. It would be a quality floor and quite reasonable as we could install it ourselves and we can purchase it locally. The sales rep from Golden Select told me: The glue used for gluing the underlay is called LS-688C and the chemical used in the foam underlay is called XPE. I have asked him for MSDS sheets but have not heard back (Golden Select is a Canadian company). I also wrote to another company that uses this structural adhesive LS-688C in cars but have not heard anything. I also wrote to the Chinese company that makes the XPE foam but have not heard back.
I am hoping you or your readers may have be able to offer some additional help or ideas.
Thanks very much Deb for all your good works!

This isn't enough information for me to research this. They need to provide an MSDS to you.
Readers, any experience with this product? Debra :-)
COMMENTS: Until someone with more knowhow replies-- I haven't found MSDS for either, but XPE is a closed-cell cross-linked polyethylene, so of course a petrochemical, made usually from high-density polyethene. In itself it probably doesn't outgas, my guess.
I have no idea what glue seals it to bamboo, but it's been suggested that (perhaps under proper mfg conditions) it self-seals to nearly anything, so the glue may be insurance.
COMMENT FROM DEBRA:
My understanding is that XPE can be sealed to materials, so there may not be any glue. But ask the manufacturer. To my knowledge, XPE doesn't outgas.

Re foam - it's all toxic and outgasses unless it states it is nontoxic. I would suggest you buy flooring without MDF, without glue, and without foam. Costco has a bamboo floor that is "low VOC." I think the near future will bring more of that and eventually "No VOC". Then, go to www.greenBuildingSupply and find out the brand of foam underlayment they use. If you can find it in your area, great, if not, they will ship it to you. All their products are non-toxic, but their wooden floors are very expensive. Check their brands and then you can look for them in your area. Joanne's sewing supplies has a non toxic foam that you can purchase for pillows and reupholstering. Foam pillows and mattresses cause many problems. There are sites that sell non-toxic pillows. The only mattress that doesn't outgas is made from natural latex, but it's very expensive, but very comfortable. Or, you can get a topper for an existing mattress. Barbara P.
