deck sealant outgassing
QUESTION:
The deck of the house where I live is going to be sealed with Thompson's. I requested a non toxic sealant to be used, but my parents refused - they will use what they have on hand.
My bedroom, the stairway and kitchen are all on this side of the house. How long will it take to cure or will it continually outgas? It had been done last a few years ago shortly before I arrived and I seem to remember conpletely avoiding the deck, closing the door to the deck, closing my bedroom windows, especially in the morning sun.

DEBRA'S ANSWER:
How long it takes for anything to outgas depends on the original toxicity of the material and the conditions. The hotter the temperature, the faster it will outgas. Also, being outdoors, the sun and other elements will aid the outgassing.
Thompson's is particularly toxic and will continue to outgass for quite a while. This is could be a significant exposure to toxic chemicals for you.
Debra :-)
Soooo sorry about your situation. It is difficult for other people to understand what we go through. I don't know your age to know how old or young you are. I would buy the non-toxic sealant myself for them to use if you can afford it. Another option...if they would buy it and you could pay them back for it or do work around the house to pay them back for them buying it. Do you have any money saved in a bank account?
I would also describe in detail what the exposure to the deck sealant that they already have may do to you. Example: I get severe flu-like aching, migraine headaches, sharp shooting pains up my arms and pins & needles sensations in my hands and feet, my lips and skin burn, etc. when I'm exposed.
My husband put a roof on our back porch a few years ago before I knew that my MCS was so severe. I didn't think that it would affect inside by being outside and a small area. I had even checked with others with MCS before doing it and they didn't think it would bother me either. Those were the symptoms I had for about a week after he put the roof on.
Good luck! An air cleaner that removes chemicals from the air may help also. Put it in your bedroom. Austin Air is a great brand. Approximately $450.00. I wish I had one when my husband put the roof on.
