wool topperQUESTION: Hi Debra,
We recently purchased a high-quality featherbed (made from polyester, "down alternative"). Trying to relieve hip pain from a saggin innerspring mattress.
Well - the pain after the first night was the worst I've had in years - I sunk way, way down into the featherbed (in the hip area) - much worse than sleeping on my old mattress alone.
My question: Would a wool topper (Shepherd's Dream has a nice one) be more firm and not sink so far down? I know wool is good for pressure point pain relief - which is what I need - and I know it compresses. But will it actually have a deep, deep "hole" after sleeping on it one night?
Thanks! Also - have heard some people say wool has a strong odor (Vivetique organic mattress with organic cotton, wool and innerspring - no rubber of any kind - has received quite a few complaints). Your opinion? POSTED BY LAA :: WISCONSIN USA :: 06/02/2009 8:19 AM DEBRA'S ANSWER:
I had a featherbed once and stopped using it because my body weight pushed the feathers aside as I slept and made a hole, which kind of defeated the purpose.
I have a Shpeherd's Dream wool topper on my bed and it does not make a hole like a featherbed. The wool stays in place and offers cushioning night after night, year after year.
I have not noticed an odor from the wool used in my bed. Shepherd's Dream will send out samples of the materials, so you can try that before you buy. Debra :-)
COMMENTS: Wool toppers are definitely great! They're probably one of our best sellers at White Lotus Home. The wool fiber is coiled, so it tends to be a bit more resilient inside a topper. With mine, I try my best to flip it regularly (every time I change the sheets) so that it wears nice and evenly and I can keep it even longer. Our wool is very natural and does have a scent to it at first, but the scent will dissipate over time. Again, always request a sample of the filling materials so you are able to "try before you buy" as Debra suggests! Wool is like a miracle fiber for bedding since it acts as an insulator for your body heat, and helps to draw the moisture away from you while sleeping (since we all sweat a little bit when we sleep!). It's also naturally dust mite resistant, another HUGE plus for bedding. The other great thing about wool toppers is that the cleaning couldn't be simpler! For mine, I like to drag it out in the backyard on a sunny day. Usually I place it on top of a flat sheet, but the sunlight releases the lanolin oil in the wool and acts as a natural cleanser/deodorizer.
Latex toppers are also really nice for helping to prevent pressure points, since it tends to be soft, yet supportive, and bounces back in the areas that you need it to. We make a great latex and wool filled topper that can be used on an existing mattress. POSTED BY HALLEE :: WHITE LOTUS HOME :: WWW.WHITELOTUS.NET :: NEW JERSEY USA :: 06/03/2009 7:38 AM

Hi Hallee - thanks for your comments on wool toppers. I am definitely making plans to purchase one. Regarding your comments on your latex and wool topper -- I am very allergic to latex (can't even be around it in bedding stores) - any idea what I could do for pressure point pain? Do you believe your wool topper would help in that regard? Thanks, LAA POSTED BY LAA :: WISCONSIN USA :: 06/09/2009 10:12 AM :: POST YOUR COMMENT
