Witch hazel

QUESTION:

Does witch hazel kill germs?

POSTED BY L.A. :: CALIFORNIA USA :: 05/12/2009 7:04 AM

DEBRA'S ANSWER:

Witch hazel is an herbal plant. It's leaves are astringent, which means it tends to shrink or constrict body tissues. It also dries, hardens, and protects the skin.

If the witch hazel preparation contains rubbing alcohol, it would kill germs, but the germ-killing agent would be the rubbing alcohol, not the witch hazel.

Debra :-)

COMMENTS:

Unfortunetly rubbing alcohol is pretty toxic stuff.

COMMENT FROM DEBRA: Yes, it is.

I actually use grain alcohol, like EverClear, the way I used to use rubbing alcohol. Vodka would probably work well too. I sanitize hard surfaces, especially computer keyboards, phones, etc. I use it as a hand sanitizer in a small spritzer bottle. You can add some essential oil drops for fragrance.

COMMENT FROM DEBRA: I wasn't familiar with Everclear, so I looked it up. It is a brand of neutral grain spirit that is available at concentrations of 75.5% alcohol (151 proof) and 95% alcohol (190 proof). Vodka, which I've been recommending, typically contains 40%–60% alcohol (80–120 proof). This is fine with me to use, as the alcohol is distilled from a plant source rather than a petrochemical.

Because of its high alcohol content, however, Everclear is illegal, unavailable, or difficult to find in many states, including California, Florida, Hawaii, Maine, Michigan, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington, and West Virginia. In California and in some other states, the 151-proof variety

If it is legal to sell Everclear where you live, you'll find it in a liquor store.
