Zeolite as a natural odor absorber?

QUESTION:

Have you or any of your bloggers had any experience with Zeolite? It appears to be volcanic rock and I'm considering using it as an odor absorber in my car. Thanks to all for any input.

DEBRA'S ANSWER:

I haven't used it personally, but I see no reason not to.

Readers, what is your experience?

Debra :-)

COMMENTS:

Zeolite is really a moisture absorber. It gets rid of the moisture, so any odors that are associated with moisture are eliminated. I have used it in the refrigerator instead of baking soda and it works very well. The best part is that zeolite can be RECHARGED by placing it in direct sunlight for several hours. Then you can reuse it. Each time you recharge it, you might lose a little of the effectiveness, but not enough to matter. One box of zeolite in the fridge that I kept recharging about every 3-4 months lasted for over 6 years for me! I don't know how much of a carbon footprint it has vs baking soda (environmental cost of mining vs. creation of baking soda and all the boxes and transport).

I keep zeolite in my car at all times, about 24 pounds. It does seem to help, but does not eliminate the problem completely. I use mine for VOC's, not for nuisance type odors. The zeolite has to be recharged periodically by letting them bake in the sun; however, there doesn't seem to be any guidelines for how often this must be done or for how long. If I have increased difficulties I bake them for at least a full day. It is sort of inconvenient, but you do what you have to. The rocks that I have came in 2 pound bags of heavy plastic mesh. I just place them about the floor.

Zeolite is an excellent natural odor absorber. If you purchase it with essential oils you will not only remove existing odors but will add whatever natural scent you like. Just be sure not to put it on anything that is plastic or painted as the essential oils can harm these items. If it appears the zeolite has stopped absorbing just put it outside in the sun for a few hours to re-vitalize it. I use it in my car and it works great.

Thanks everyone - any suggestions on the most economical place to purchase?
