Happy New Year! It feels like a new year to me today. I had a nice "hibernation" over the holidays and am ready for a fresh start! We seem to be having an early spring here in Florida. My backyard orchids are already blooming, which doesn't usually happen til February.

Today I've answered all the questions that accumulated over the holidays, inlcuding one about finding a car with a less-toxic interior. And some tips for finding organic cotton at white sales, and green living shows on television.

My husband Larry and I decided to get a good start on the new year by doing one thing that can make our lives healthier or more eco-friendly. We decided to walk more and admire Nature in our neighborhood. What is one thing you can do?

Debra :-)

ORGANIC COTTON BEDDING AT JANUARY WHITE SALES

If you hurry, you may be able to pick up organic cotton flannel sheet and percale sheet sets in colors at your local Bed Bath & Beyond store, or at Bed Bath & Beyond online.

This is the time of year when bedding of all kinds goes on sale. This is when I shop for natural fiber bedding. Check local stores and websites listed on Debra's List : Beds & Bedding, including Garnet Hill, Linenplace, Linensource, and more.

GREEN TV

You know green living is going mainstream when it gets it's own television show.

This coming Sunday, 7 January, "Living With Ed" debuts on HGTV at 10 pm ET/PT. That's living with actor Ed Begley and his wife, who don't always see eye to eye about how to live green. I missed the preview yesterday, so I haven't seen the show, but there are only six episodes, so I thought I should tell you now so you can watch from the beginning if you want to. more...

Last night I came across a show on the Discovery Home Channel that seems to have been on for a bit. It's called "Living Fresh" (airs at various times throughout the day). It has segments on various aspects of organic living. Last night I saw an interesting segment where they visited an organic fabric factory and talked with the manufacturer. more...

How Do I Choose a Nontoxic Car?

I am chemically sensitive and i am shopping for another car. i am very confused and overwhelmed by all the things to consider.

New cars will reek all the formaldehyde, plus whatever is put in by the manufacturer ( would you know the specifics?)

Used cars, usually if they have been well taken care of, will have a lot of armour all, would have beeen taken to the car wash several times to have the upholstery and floors cleaned, shampooed, and etc,and there goes more, more and more chemicals!

My old and out gassed car needs a brake, and I need to go on a long road trip to see my doctor in California. I am getting lost facing so many things to take into consideration!

PLEASE HELP AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!

thank you

Bring on the Cookware!

I want to find an electric skillet that has a stone, ceramic or stainless steel finish; or even cast iron. I also hope to find a breadmaker and food dehydrator with safe finishes. I have struck out on all three.

However, I may have found more alternatives to non-stick! Plus I also found a $20 wood trivet that fits around the large soapstone griddle from "Brazil on my Mind" - (which is cheapest from Greenfeet).

Long-Term Toxicity of Beds

We bought a regular bed for our son and assumed that it would off-gas an be relatively safe. But now I am wondering if I was too naïve. However, my son, who is now 10, does not have any health issues.

We got a mattress and box spring treated with the fire retardant, PB 603 (which I assume is one of the PBDE's). The mattress is now 2 years old and the box spring is just over 1 year old. Is it best to get rid of this bed and get something cleaner or has the worst off-gassing already happened?

Safety of Stored Scented Candles

Can scented candles that are being stored near you only (not being burnt or used) harm health? The smell of these candles from a scented candle showroom and storage next to us is very strong and it burns our eyes and throats. If they don't burn the candles and they are just storing them, can the strong smell harm health? Can soot, lead, metal and etc... travel when the candles are not used and they're just sitting there?

Aluminum safety

Hi,

I have noticed that after baking cookies on my aluminum cookie sheet and dry them off after washing them - there is always a silver residue on the towel - Has the coating come off or is there any danger in this?

Thank you.

Alternative to Aluminum Foil

Hi Debra - Happy, Healthy New Year to you! I've been reading so much about the problems with using aluminum for cooking. I've figured out really good alternatives to aluminum foil for everything except baking in the oven (such as covering very large roasting pans and covering turkeys with foil tents). I tried parchment paper and it was a mess. I'm afraid to use a heavier paper (such as a cut-up brown paper bag) for fear of contaminants in the recycled & heavily chemically processed wood pulp. Do you or your readers have any alternatives? Thanks so much for your help!

polyester fleece

Hi Debra,I am curious about your opinion of fleece clothing. I am referring to the garden variety microfleece, not the greener, recycled six pack ring kind. Are there any health risks associated with it? How about children's sleepwear that has NOT been treated with flame retardands? (I understand that polyester is inherently flame resistant and does not require chemical treatment to pass regulations). I have taken all of my children's fleece pajamas out of circulation until I know for sure.
Thank you,
