I'm pleased to report that my new Green Living Q&A blog is going very well! It's a lot easier for me to answer more questions with this format. In this issue, we have 24 Q&A's!

Next week I will be in San Francsico all week for the West Coast Green green building conference. I'll be speaking on the afternoon of "Homeowner's Day" Saturday, September 30, at 4pm, if you are in the area and want to come by and say hello (view the full schedule). There are going to be some great speakers that I've mentioned in this newsletter, including architect and author of Natural Remodeling for the Not-So-Green House Carol Venolia, Natural Home magazine editor Robin Griggs Lawrence, and Bau-Biologist Mary Cordaro, creator of The Mary Cordaro Collection of natural beds.

I will also be staying in one of San Francisco's best green hotels. So I'll tell you all about my trip in the next issue...

AT HOME WITH DEBRA: When Smoke Got in Our Eyes

Last week I had a disaster in my kitchen. I had left something simmering on the stove, expecting my husband Larry to watch it, and when I came home, the kitchen was full of smoke! So we had to learn fast how to clean up smoke odors. Find out what we did that was effective.

Here are just some of the links I added to Debra's List in the last two weeks.

Trash vs. sewer/septic, which disposal is better for environment?

I feel like I'm asking a very trivial question, but I try to be mindful of the environment in all my choices. Whenever I do something like blow my nose or pick up a dead bug off the floor, I always wonder if it is better for the environment to use a tissue and put it in the trash (and eventually the landfill) or to use a bit of toilet paper and flush it, sending it through the sewer or septic system. Does anyone know?

Stabilized Cellulose Insulation

Hi there,

A friend recently contacted me and told me she had purchased stabilized cellulose insulation for her (existing) Florida home and has seen a tremendous difference in her electric bill since. The websites I have looked at claim it is a totally natural, safe material, but don't give much concrete information beyond that. I was wondering if you or any readers had any experience with it's safety as compared to fiberglass insulation.

Thanks in advance for any information. Naomi, Florida, USA

Dishwashing soap

On your website under the section "At Home With Debra . . . How I Really Live" you say that you use an unscented liquid soap that you got as a bonus to clean your dishes and countertops. I'm wondering if you've run out of that original supply and if so, what do you use now?

Mold Problems With Front-Loading Clothes Washers

Dear Debra:

I am in the midst of purchasing a washing machine and dryer. The low-water, electicity using front-loading machines seemed like the perfect answer.
[Read the whole question online...]

I called some appliance repair shops and was given the same advice: Don't buy a front loader, as they are problematical and always form mold. Purchase a basic top-loading, heavy-duty machine with a dial or button control. Stay away from digital and electronics.

What is your experience with and knowledge of these machines? I believe in Europe they only use front loaders. Maybe their machines are different, or am I making much ado about nothing? What first attracted me to them was their low water use and no "walking or balance" problems, since there is no agitator. However, there seem to be other issues with them, including high maintenance.

Latex Foam Sealant

I am a project management consultant, and have been using "Latex Foam Sealants" for specific applications for the past 2 years, for its many advantages over standard foam products.
However, my current client has expressed a concern over the product after it has occured and wishes to know if there is any health/environmental issue of the product;
a) after it has cured. ie. will it give off any harmful gases/odors?.
b) Is there any issue next to hot water heating pipes?
c) will it break down over time? (this installation is NOT exposed to UV)

Products are
DAPtex® Latex Insulating Foam Sealant
Website http://www.dap.com/product_details.aspx?product_id=11

and

Touch-n-foam
http://www.touch-n-foam.com/foamlatex.htm

Both appear and behave very similar (I would almost hazard a guess made in the same factory).

Anodized cookware

Is anodized cookware safe? I own all stainless steel cookware but occasionally would like to use a non-stick pan and I've been wondering about anodized aluminum. I also own a stainless steel pressure cooker and have been thinking about getting a larger anodized one but I'm not sure if they are safe.
Thank you.

Cleaning an Antique Wood Floor

You have been a huge help to me before and I am hoping you have a solution for my latest conundrum.

I have a very dirty, antique wood floor which has been waxed in the past. It is a Versailles pattern and was taken from an old castle in France. I want to clean and preserve the floor's beauty without poisoning us and the house. The floor is in the dining room, to add to the problem.

I thank you in advance for any suggestions for cleaning and preserving this treasured floor.

Is Tin Bakeware Safe?

I have two daughters who both recently got married and I have been trying to determine the safest type of bakeware for all of us to use. Of course I want to avoid non-stick coatings as well as aluminum. Stainless steel is available, but not a good conductor of heat and doesn't brown well for baking. Stainless steel that is sandwiched with aluminum also seems to be coated with an alloy of stainless plus aluminum. The silicone bakeware seems safe as far as we know so far? There is one company (Kaiser) that makes a line that is steel coated in tin---------What do you think about the safety of that? Do you know of any health concerns related to cooking in tin? I have really been struggling with this issue and would appreciate any insight you could share with me.

Thanks so much!

Unbleached Cotton & Boric Acid on Futons: Strong Odor: Is this toxic?

hello,

a few months ago, i purchased several japanese style futons online. upon receipt of the futons i noticed a VERY STRONG SMELL. i emailed the etailer, and they said it was "not off-gassing" but was simply the combination of the UNBLEACHED COTTON and a SMALL AMT OF BORIC ACID (flame retardency).

according to the etailer, the smell should dissipate within a week with regular use. unfortunately, it's been several months, and the SMELL PERSISTS.

recently, my husband purchased some vaccum cleaner bags and a new filter. the smell of those items had the "same smell" as the futon beds! i figured, "this can't be good!".

i have been unable to sleep on the futon as of yet (still airing it out) but my 2 boys sleep on their's. this causes me great concern. i want to be sure they're not being exposed to harmful toxic fumes etc.

i was wondering if you might be able to tell me if either the unbleached cotton or the boric acid might be problematic in terms of inhalation. the etailer sent me a lengthy report re: boric acid and it's safety in regards to inhalation. but i'd feel so much better if i heard something from you and your readers.

if this is simply an issue of my 'bionic nose' gone whacko, that's fine. but if it's an issue of exposing my children to toxicity, that's NOT FINE. i'd so appreciate your help regarding this.

thank you very much.

Ceiling fans

I realize it's a bit late to be asking this, but if next summer is as hot as this one was, I want to have a ceiling fan. I thought about getting one and then thought maybe the motor would put out an odor. My portable fans don't have an odor, but with a ceiling fan, there would be no way of knowing, before installing it, whether or not there would be an odor from the motor, at which point it would be a little late to return it. Is this a realistic concern?

Nontoxic Cleaning Gloves?

Looking for some gloves that i can wear when house cleaning. i tried a pair of 100% latex gloves from the local linen n things (the long purple ones with cuffs). but the smell was horriffic! i've been airing it out outside for 2 weeks, and although the smell has gotten better, it still lingers.

unsure if these are considered toxic w/ all the outgassing etc.
are there a pair non toxic gloves you might recommend? also, would appreciate a rec for a purchasing source.

thank you.

Formaldehyde

Hi Debra,

Thanks for all the wonderful information! I keep reading a lot on plastics and formaldehyde being unhealthy. Can you give me some sources?

My husband works in a manufacturing plant. They make plastic parts for various things (cars, mostly). He comes home smelling very "chemically" :-(

When I asked what the smell was, he said "probably formaldehyde". What does this mean for our family? He assures me that it is not going to harm us, but he really hasn't done any research other than the fact that his employer does not take any precautions (he has worked at other plants where they were required to change clothes/shower before going home because of harmful chemicals in the plant).

Can you tell me if this can affect us? And if so, can you also point me to some other sources for further information?

Thanks in Advance!

Earth-Friendly Hand Sanitizer

Dear Debra,
Per the request of my son's teacher, I am looking for a hand sanitizer that he can keep and use at school. I would like to avoid the typical store-bought products that contain potentially harmful chemicals. I understand that handwashing is the best way to get rid of germs, but I'd like to accomodate the teacher's request. Do you have any ideas or a recipe perhaps? I was wondering if aloe vera gel with some essential oils added would do the trick?

Using plastic or melamine cups/plates

Does anyone know if it is safe to use plastic or melamine cups/plates that get washed in the dishwasher? What about sippy cups? I worry that the heat from the dishwasher will cause toxins to leach into food/beverages. Thanks!

Allergy-free air fresheners and candles

I was wondering if you could recommend a brand/type of indoor air freshener (the kind that you plug in) that can be safely used by people who have asthma or allergies? I currently use Glade and Air Wick Brand plug-ins but they bother my husband's sinuses. We have a cat and dog so need to have something that we can use inside to help with any pet odors that might occur.

Also, I really enjoy candles and find that I also can't use them inside because they also bother my husband. Are there any good allergy-proof candles that I might be able to try? I really enjoy relaxing scents in my home, but my hubby has put a damper on my pleasures!

Thank you for any advice or recommendations!

Formaldehyde Absorbers

Do you know of any product that absorbs formaldehyde? Something that does not just cover the smell. I would like anything, on or off the web.

I've been searching the web for products that claim to absorb Formaldehyde, and so far have only found one. It's SMELLEZE from IMTEK. Do you know anything about it? I've just started using it & so can't tell anything yet, but wonder about it's effectivness because of the trouble I had with IMTEK. They took my money, but never sent the product and would not respond to my e-mail and phone messages. I had to get the BBB after them before they would communicate with me and send the product.

I've been remodeling my bedroom and I'm concerned about Formaldehyde in the wood products and caulks I'm using. After a few days of outgassing, I can't smell anything now, but even below the smell level, It could probably do me harm because I spend 8 hrs sleeping plus the hours I spend remodeling, on the computer, and watching movies (I'm separating the bed from the entertainment center with curtains so hopefully when I go inside the curtains, my mind will accept that it's time to sleep).

I'm a scientific type of person and so don't rely on how I feel to let me know whether something is good or not. I'm going to have to buy an expensive monitor to tell how much Formaldehyde I'm breathing for sure. I can get a one-time moditor for $55, or a continuous one for several hundred. I found a cheap one for about $60, but don't know if I can trust it because it's so much cheaper than the others I've looked at. It's an Oregon Scientific Indoor Air Quality Monitor AR112C. Do you know anything about it or other monitors?

Thanks for any help.

Dry Clean 100% Cotton?

I have purchased some 1005 cotton tab top curtains for my kitchen. Even though the fabric is cotton the label says to dry clean only. I don't want to dry clean these. I have a high efficiency washer and would prefer to wash them on the delicate or hand wash cycle in cold water. Do you think this would be advisable? Also would it be better to hang dry the curtains instead of using a dryer to prevent shrinkage. I really blows my mind that dry cleaning is recommended for 100% cotton fabric! The curtains are manufactured overseas – does this play into why they have to be dry cleaned??
