I'm very excited today to tell you about a new book that has just been published. It is a greoundbreaking book that actually redefines what it means to be "natural". Be sure to read my interview with author Carol Venolia and see her suggestions for cooling my home naturally. I had the pleasure a couple of weeks ago to be interviewed for the "More Hip Than Hippie" podcast. It's a great and lively interview about how I got started and natural beds. You can listen to it at "In Bed With Debra Lynn Dadd" (my interview starts about a quarter of the way into the podcast). Debra :-)

AT HOME WITH DEBRA: Connecting My Home With Nature Over the weekend I received a hot-off-the-press copy of a new book called Natural Remodeling for the Not-So-Green House: Bringing Your Home into Harmony with Nature. It was written by my friend Carol Venolia, who was an eco-architect way before there was a field of green building and Kelly Lerner, another award-winning eco-architect. This book is unique among green building books in two ways: it addresses remodeling houses (most green building books are about new construction) and it focuses on ways to welcome the flows of nature into your home--sun, air, and water--to provide not just function, but joy. You'll get a new perspective on what's possible by reading this book. To get a taste, read my interview with Carol and see how she applies her natural remodeling principles to cooling my house. MONEY-SAVING TIPS: Get What You Need Without Money It's not always necessary to use money to get things you need. Here are some ways to get things without spending money, and help the environment too by saving resources. * Barter. I get a lot of services I need by trading my services. Even if someone doesn't need my professional services, I have a lot of skills I can trade. Be creative and don't hesitate to ask for a trade. People are often willing to do this if you have something they want. * Gifts. In my family, nobody is offended if we tell others what we want for birthday and Christmas gifts. In fact, they will often ask because they would like to give something that is useful. My husband and I have a set of four Shaker chairs that we built together from kits--each of which cost $200 just for the kit. We got them over a two year period of birthdays and Christmas, with everyone chipping in. * Borrow. Many things we use infrequently can be borrowed from friends, family, and neighbors. Just yesterday a new neighbor came by asking to borrow a particular garden tool, and offered to come help us in our garden in exchange. And don't forget the public library for books. * Find it. Now this may sound amazing, but we often find free things just sitting on the street. Here in Florida, it's general practice to put things you don't want on the curb, and everyone knows you can just take it away without asking. We've found furniture, bicycles, and all kinds of useful stuff. We keep our eyes open as we drive around.

E.logical / Nyco Products has Green Seal certified industrial cleaning products, including a multi-purpose cleaner with citrus oils and hydrogen peroxide, a degreaser, glass cleaner, and bathroom cleaner. These products meet standards required for LEED credits, and other standards. BallParkPens.com makes "quality writing instruments handcrafted from wooden stadium seats removed from demolished ballparks." Refillable wooden ballpoint and rollerball pens, each unique, engraved with the name of the ballpark, and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. A great gift for a baseball fan. I posted two new links for wedding dresses. Threadhead Creations will custom-make your wedding and braidesmaid dresses using their designs or yours. Choose from hemp/silk charmeuse, hemp/silk floral jacquard, hemp/silk blend or hempcel (hemp/tencel), with 100% silk or 100% cotton lining. Faernyn's Grove makes fantasy wedding dresses designed around corsets with hemp twill, cotton canvas, and HempSilk (a blend of 60% hemp and 40% silk). Terracycle Plant Food is an innovative liquid plant food that is not only made from some of the best compost there is (worm poop), but also comes packaged in recycled used plastic soda bottles. The company has established collection sites to recycle bottles all over America, and has already rescued and reused over 1 million bottles.
