Today it just feels like one of those lazy summer days. I just want to lie in a hammock with a cool drink and have barbeque with a big summer salad for dinner. So that's just what we're going to do! I've written about how we do healthy, eco-friendly barbeque in our backyard, and have included some recipes for cool sugar-free drinks, so just pretend you're at a party at my house as you read the newsletter today.

AT HOME WITH DEBRA: My Backyard Barbeque

FRESH EGGS ARE BECOMING BILLBOARDS

It seems like there is no line that advertisers will not cross to get our attention.

The latest medium for advertising messages is...eggs! Yes, coming in September and October, in selcted areas, consumers will find clever slogans for new television shows etched on their eggs when they open the carton!

The ads are placed on the eggs using a laser technology developed to place the "freshness and traceability coding" directly on the eggs. This new code not only allows you to know for sure how old the eggs are in your refrigerator, but you can also find out where the egg originated, the date it left the plant and the names of the distributor and retailer by entering the code on a website. For more information on this new system and some egg safety tips, go to www.myfreshegg.com.

I'm totally in favor of freshness and traceability coding for foods. But advertising? I prefer my eggs just as Mother Nature intended. Another reason to buy organic.

MONEY-SAVING TIPS: Cook it Yourself

Cooking food at home for yourself and your family is one of those activities where it's a big win-win all around. You save money, everyone gets to eat fresh healthy food, and it's better for the environment because it's low tech.

The very best savings--and best food--comes from growing your own produce in your backyard and then preparing it yourself. Seeds cost a couple of dollars for a packet and yield a hundred dollars worth of food.

But even if you don't have space or time to garden, simply cooking from fresh ingredients will save you a bundle over buying packaged or take-out foods. When you buy a food that someone else prepares, you have to pay for their labor. Better to pay more for organic ingredients and cook for yourself than spend that money to have a factory cook for you.

If you are short on time, there are many ways to be efficient about food preparation. Choose meals that are simple to prepare, make a big pot of something and eat it several times, make your own frozen dinners by cooking on the weekend and filling your freezer.

Cooking is a delicious way to save money!

REALLY COOL SUGAR-FREE DRINKS

One of the things I've been really interested in is eliminating sugar from my diet. And for the past month or so I've had a lot of attention on coming up with cool drinks that taste great but don't have a lot of sugar.

I've got some great ways to make fruit sodas, a refreshing ginger ale, variations on lemonade and limeade, iced tea, and even a sugar-free icy Mocha "Frappechino" that tastes like the real thing.

Q & A: Purchasing Himalayan Salt

I know that ordinary table salt is nothing but sodium chloride. My problem is trying to settle on a company to buy Himalayan salt from. Every one of the companies that I have looked at claim that they are the "one and only". And, on one site, they claim that if the salt is not red, then it is not the real Himalayan salt. Gosh, I thought the salt came in a variety of colors, depending on whereÊtheÊsalt was mined from. Which company would you buy from?

Q & A: Natural Hair Restoration

My question is for my husband. He is in his early 30's and is showing signs of balding. I can't help but wonder if it's more than just genes. He has been around a lot of chemicals and metalÊdust in his work environments. Do you have any recommendations for him? Maybe a heavy metal detox? Thanks.

Q & A: Safety of Talalay Latex for MCS?

I am a regular reader of your columns and refer to your book regularly, however I must take exception with your recomendation of Talalay latex for the chemically sensitive. Talalay is processed with and contains 3% preservatives like poly ethylene glycol. Dunlop latex is probably a better choice for MCS types. Please see The "Dunlop VS Talalay" Truth and Natural Dunlop vs. Natural Talalay for more info.

Q & A: Safety of Acrylic Dental Device

I grind my teeth very badly and have had many problems with it recently. So my dentist made me a plastic acrylic molded tooth guard to wear every night on my bottom teeth. I still grind against it but it stops the teeth from hitting together. Once I got it home though I began to wonder whether having a piece of plastic in my mouth every night was any better than just grinding my teeth. Do you know if this stuff would be bad for us to have in our mouth every night? Thank you!
