One reader reported using Eucalyptus Oil and Wintergreen Oil (or other mint oil) while at at the didgeridoo festival in the Sierra Mountains just south of Yosemite. "AND IT WORKED," he said. "Worked for only for about 2 hours per application, but hey, I just put more on! I was talking toÊa bunch of Australian people, as you can guess there were quite a few at a Dig fest. Anyway they use it as well." Another reader told me about Mosquito Barrier, a repellent spray that you apply to your lawn, made from super-potent garlic. She said she uses it and it is very effective...and they live on a lake! The idea is to repel mosquitoes from your yard altogether, and they won't come in your house.

POLLUTION IN PEOPLE: A Study in Seattle Yet another study has been done on toxic chemicals found in the blood of humans, this time in Seattle, Washington. The Seattle Times has reported that people "were alarmed to discover what's inside them." It was of interest to me that finding out the exact toxic chemicals in their blood motivated people to change the products they use. "A state senator stopped using his nonstick cookware. A Seattle surgeon started insisting that people take off their shoes when entering her home. A local environmentalist is drastically reducing his consumption of halibut and tuna. Each [participant] had their own way of responding to news that their body contained traces of toxic chemicals and metals." The study, done by the Toxic-Free Legacy Coalition found residues of plastic compounds, fire retardants, mercury and pesticides in the blood of 10 participants. Read more about the toxics test...

MONEY-SAVING TIPS: Save, Save, Save I know from past experience what it can be like to want to purchase something and not have the money for it. So I want to tell you two things I did that dramatically changed my financial condition. The first is to save 10% of all the money that comes your way. I just subtract 10% from every bank deposit and put it in another account. At first you may think you can't live on 10% less, but if you do this, you will find ways to spend less and/or earn more and it will all work out. Savings is a "bill" that needs to be paid just like any other, not what you do with "leftover" money. And then don't spend this money. Just let it build. Then, set aside money for "big ticket" items you want to buy, like a natural mattress--even if just a dollar or a dime at a time. Put cash in a box or a jar labeled "mattress money" or whatever, along with the amount you want to accumulate. Then just keep putting money there and don't take it out til you reach your goal. Make it a game to find the money--just keep making choices to save here and there and put that money away, or take on extra little jobs. Applying these two principles put me in a position of "thinking ahead" about money and directing it where I want it to go, rather than "catching up" about money and scrambling to pay bills.
