Dear Debra,

Today is America Recycles Day so I thought I would devote most of the issue to recycling. I've included links to how nature recycles, how I make furniture out of various reclaimed items, a variety of recycled products and even some recipes for sugar-free desserts that are made by recycling leftovers!

I also launched two new websites last week--I have so many websites now that I made a Map of Debra's Websites to show you where they all are, what they contain, and how they fit together.

In the next issue, on November 29, the whole issue will be on holiday gift and decorating, and baking ideas that are healthy and help the Earth.

Debra :-)

P.S. TO THE MAN WITH THE QUESTION ON CHRISTMAS TREES-- Sorry! Your email fell into cyberspace. Please send me your question again and I will answer it right away via email, then post the answer in the next issue.

SECRETS OF NATURE: Nature Recycles Everything

[Website has since been renamed "Wisdom of Life"]

Secrets of Nature is one of the new websites I launched last week. There I will be posting essays on how nature does things in contrast to how we do things in our industrial-consumer world. In this essay, I explain how nature's recycling program is different from our industrial-consumer recycling, and how we can participate in both natural and industrial recycling.

AT HOME WITH DEBRA: How I Make Recycled Furniture

Modern furniture is so toxic and natural furniture is so expensive that my husband and I usually make our furniture by recyling old furniture that needs refurbishing. I tell you just how I found these pieces and what we did to them.

TIP: Recycle Your Way to Wealth

Many years ago, a second cousin of mine, who is now quite elderly, used to hold seminars for women to teach them money management, and she also wrote a book.

I recall reading her recommendation that readers save little things like stray paper clips, the rubber bands around the newspapers, the straight pins you pull out of new shirts. Because if you save all these little things when they cross your path, you don't have to spend money on them later. She said, "Would you rather spend your money on paper clips or a trip to Europe?"

Indeed, she has a point. Many of the actions we can take to help the ecology of our planet also help us economically too....

SWEET SAVVY: Recycled Recipes

These two recipes made with natural sweeteners from my Sweet Savvy recipe database come from the thrifty homemaker tradition of turning leftovers into delicious new dishes:

  • Bread Pudding takes day-old bread and soaks it in agave- sweetened cream and eggs to make a favorite comfort food. Mine comes with a delicious Rum Sauce made from butter and agave nectar.
  • English Trifle is a traditional British dessert that recycles dry cake with custard, whipped cream and fruits to make a decadent dessert.

Q & A: Electromagnetic expsosure from sonic toothbrush

Dear Debra ~

In a recent newsletter, you mentioned some plastic products you do use, and I think a sonic toothbrush was on the list. I also use one, but wonder about the very high magnetic field created by it. I tested it during use, and the readings were off the chart. What are your thoughts?

Q & A: Inexpensive water filters

Hi Debra,

I read your tip about avoiding water stored in plastic containers. We've been using a Brita pitcher as an inexpensive solution for the water we drink at home. The problem is that the Brita pitchers are plastic. Is there an alternative that is comparable in cost?

Q & A: Household lubricant

Dear Debra,

Greetings! And thank you so much for your valuable service.

Any tips for a non-toxic, odor free (or at least low odor) lubricant for household uses such as oiling door hinges and windows? Food oils go rancid and we would like to avoid petrochemicals if possible.

Looking forward to your response. Thanks.
