Dear Debra,

Yesterday my husband and I went to see the new movie "March of the Penguins" and we loved it! This is the best nature documentary I have ever seen. It tells the story of how the Emperor penguins in Antarctica perpetuate their species, and the arduous process they must go through to make sure their offspring survive in the harshest environment on Earth. The compelling story is told with astounding photography and evocative music, but the real joy is just in watching the penguins, which are a delight! This is a great movie for kids-- the children in the audience obviously were enjoying every minute of the film. Watching the penguins in their chilly environment really cooled us off on a hot summer day!

Debra :-)

AT HOME WITH DEBRA: What I Do With My Garbage

Overstuffed landfills are one of our major environmental problems. The solution starts right at home, with the garbage we create and what we do with it. I no longer think of garbage as something destined for a landfill, but rather valuable material that can be passed on for other uses.

New Resources on GreenHomeGuide

One of my many activities is to help review products for inclusion in the green building products directory GreenHomeGuide. It fills a niche of providing not only product links, but reviews and comments about the products from professional and home users.

In addition, they have now lauched "Know-How"--a weekly series of tips, interviews, and case studies from scientists, building professionals, and homeowners. Know-How answers questions like why remodel green, what to do to achieve your environmental or health goals, and how to do it.

Every week a new article in the Know-How series will be published. Every month a new subject will be addressed.

I particularly like GreenHomeGuide because it is geared to homeowners, where many of the other green building site are for professionals. It's a great place to start if you are remodeling or building a new home.

SWEET SAVVY: Granola

A reader asked me if I had a recipe for granola bars. After visiting my local supermarket and finding out how much sugar is in them, I decided to make my own granola, and it was delicious (and easy too!).

Q & A: Handling a Flea Infestation

We are seeking information on how to handle a flea infestation problem with also mites that were brought into the house from the yard on cats. We don't want to bomb or use toxic chemicals, but cleaning and removing furniture and carpet hasn't handled it. What do you recommend? A quick response would be appreciated, as it is overwhelming! Thanks!

Q & A: OK To Use Water-Based Latex Paint?

I have a small child who frequently makes a mess on the walls, so I need to wash them often. I'd like to use a water-based paint that is designed for washing but there doesn't seem to be one that is low-VOC. Is it OK to use water-based latex paints?
